Affiliate Summit West 2009 - Las Vegas

I'm off to cover Affiliate Summit West 2009 in Las Vegas which starts at Noon tomorrow through the end of Tuesday. Although I've now been in affiliate marketing industry for three years full-time, this will be my first time at an Affiliate Summit so I'm very excited about attending and reporting back to you all my experiences and latest news daily and of course, as per usual, I'll be posting a ton of pic from the event since Shawn Collins was kind enough to grant me a full media press pass to the event!

Event info:

Sunday, January 11, 2009 - Tuesday, January 13, 2009
Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino
3700 W Flamingo Rd Las Vegas

Affiliate Summit West is the largest Affiliate Summit, the premier affiliate marketing conference, of the year. This three day conference includes an exhibit hall with affiliate merchants, vendors, and networks, as well as multiple tracks of educational sessions covering the latest trends and information from affiliate marketing experts. The keynote speaker for Monday, January 12 will be Gary Vaynerchuk, star of Wine Library TV and Director of Operations at Wine Library in Springfield, NJ.

I look forward to all the seminars, speakers, events and most of all finally getting to meet many people who I've worked with over the years like Jim Kukral of The Daily Flip bog and the new The Biz Web Coach site which I highly recommend you all check out!

Another guy I've been following for years is Carsten Cumbrowski who I consider to be one of the smartest guys in the business. Check out Carsten's website here.

I also look forward to meeting with many of the third party affiliate networks that I've worked with over the years like the folks from Commission Junction, LinkShare and the PepperJam Network. I also want to meet with other affiliate network representatives to see what they have to offer and will be reporting back to you my findings.

Well, time to pack up the Z and hit the road and head up US 60 in the direction of Vegas where I plan to arrive at the break of dawn so I'll be driving through the desert at night, with the top down, enjoying the full moon, cranking some tunes and will be filing reports several times a day live from Affiliate Summit West 2009.

If any other attendees are reading this and want to hook up at the event give me a call on my cell at 602-793-7890 or leave me a message for me at the New York, New York Hotel & Casino where I'll be staying!!

Do you use Google Alerts?

One of the best resources I use to filter my online news is by setting up Google News alerts on various topics. You can set them up with any keyword(s) you want. I find it an invaluable tool and highly recommend that everyone sets them up. If you want to learn more about how to set up your own alerts go here

Once setup you can get a daily digest of news alerts pertaining to any topic you wish and you get abbreviated news stories with clickable links to be able to read further on any story in the digest. I find it far more useful than Twitter because I really don't need to know what you had for breakfast or that your dog barfed on your pillow.

Here's my Google news alert from today for "affliate marketing" which I read every day:

Spyware-Driven Ad Fraud Increasingly Widespread

A new survey names names and looks at the impact of spyware-driven advertising fraud on VistaPrint, a company that provides online graphics services to consumers and businesses.

Disreputable online advertising is alive and well, despite news that ad network Jellycloud, previously associated with spyware and adware when operating under the names Claria and Gator, is closing its doors.

In a report released Tuesday, spyware researcher, attorney, and Harvard associate professor Benjamin Edelman examined the impact of spyware-driven advertising fraud on VistaPrint, a company that provides online graphics services to consumers and businesses.

"Although VistaPrint's [CEO] Robert Keane claims to effectively oversee VistaPrint's marketing practices, I emphatically disagree," Edelman explained. "To the contrary, I've seen ample evidence of VistaPrint promoted by spyware and adware programs that sneak onto users' computers without consent (including through security exploits) and through ruse and deception."

The issue, Edelman claimed, is that VistaPrint fails to police its marketing partners. "As a result, VistaPrint's advertising spending helps fund spyware and adware programs that sneak onto users' PCs, with serious harms to performance, reliability, and privacy," he said.

Edelman's report provides details of six specific instances in which VistaPrint's online marketing partners defrauded VistaPrint. They did so by, for example, claiming a commission for sending traffic to VistaPrint that they didn't send. Or they hijacked traffic to VistaPrint by routing it though a chain of marketing affiliates and then back to VistaPrint for a commission.

Among the companies Edelman cites for fraudulent traffic manipulation is Performics, a company that Google (NSDQ: GOOG) acquired when it bought DoubleClick and subsequently sold in August to Publicis Groupe.

Other advertising companies or affiliates singled out include Vomba, Hydra Network Affiliate 19934, Clickbooth Affiliate 14941, WhenU, MediaTraffic, Iadsdirect, Clickbooth Affiliate 7781, Revenue Gateway Affiliate 12489, CPA Empire, CPA Builder, Weclub, CX Digital Media Affiliate 13736, Deluxe Communications, Smartyseek, and Zango.

Edelman said that spyware-based advertising fraud affects most merchants who operate affiliate, cost-per-action, or other conversion-contingent programs.

"VistaPrint's marketing partners are defrauding VistaPrint by claiming commissions on sales they actually did nothing to cause," said Edelman. "Such commissions are entirely wasted, yielding no bona fide marketing benefit to VistaPrint."

The real losers here, Edelman said, are VistaPrint, its shareholders, and the public. "In 2008, VistaPrint marketing consumed 31.9% of revenue (more than $125 million) while profits were just 9.9% ($39.7 million)," said Edelman. "Meanwhile, fraud against VistaPrint also harms the general public: Consumers suffer unwanted installations of spyware programs funded, in part, by theft from VistaPrint."

VistaPrint did not respond to a request for comment.

Adware and spyware, far from being dead, as some would like to believe, are alive and "becoming increasingly widespread," Edelman concludes.

Affiliate Marketing Still Cost Effective, but Budgets Shrinking

More retailers are seeing affiliate marketing as an effective sales channel - 46 percent of them rate it as very cost-effective for driving customer acquisition, up from 44 percent last year - but reduced budgets are affecting traffic and sales, finds new research (via Retailer Daily).

The average proportion of online marketing budget designated to affiliate marketing has dropped from 18 percent to 14 percent since 2007, according to the Affiliate Marketing Survey Report 2008, conducted by E-consultancy and R.O.EYE.

Moreover, the proportion of online sales ascribed to affiliate activity has decreased from 16 percent to 12 percent over the same period.

The report is based on the findings of a July survey of more than 250 merchants and 150 agencies located mostly in the UK (78 percent) but also the US (5 percent) Europe (10 percent) and elsewhere (7 percent).

Despite the inherently low-risk nature of performance-based affiliate marketing programs, less money is being invested: Restricted budget has jumped from fifth place ('07) to second place in the hierarchy of barriers to successful affiliate marketing.

Google Launches Affiliate Network

By Kenneth Corbin
July 11, 2008

Google is now in the affiliate-marketing business, having launched the Google Affiliate Network, a rebranding of the network run by DoubleClick's Performics business. In the typical affiliate program, publishers place links on their Web site to online retailers or other e-commerce sites and receive a commission for each referral they pass along. The relaunched network will put Google in competition with large affiliate networks such as ValueClick's Commission Junction and LinkShare, a division of the Japanese concern Rakuten. The rollout comes as Google has been talking up new ad-driven business lines and integrating the recently acquired online ad powerhouse DoubleClick. Google, which built much of its empire on pairing ads with people's search queries, is looking to expand its display-ad network through its new DoubleClick assets, and accelerate its video advertising both on YouTube and through the new AdSense for video product. Many online retailers derive business through affiliate programs, either in-house or through an outside network. Amazon.com runs its own program. eBay recently followed suit, dropping its long-standing partner Commission Junction and taking its network in-house. Among the larger retailers participating in the Google's network are Barnes & Noble, Circuit City and Target. Advertisers pay through a cost-per-action (CPA) model, in which they are charged only for the placement when a customer makes a purchase or takes another action that qualifies as a conversion. Publishers will receive their commissions twice a month. Google said that it will put each application through a quality review, admitting publishers into the network at its own discretion. Once they have been added to the network, publishers will be able to apply to advertisers, who can decide on a case-by-case basis which sites are a good match for their links.

Affiliate Marketing Litigation Raises Concerns

Amazon and Overstock.com are fighting the law in court, but many fear that if it holds up, other states will follow suit, and affiliate marketers will become responsible for keeping track of overwhelmingly complex state and local tax codes. It's a nervous time in the affiliate-marketing space. A controversial law took effect in New York last month that requires merchants who run affiliate programs to collect sales taxes on purchases made in that state, even if they don't have any employees or operations there. Prior to the law, individual consumers were responsible for reporting out-of-state purchases on their income tax returns, but most people either didn't know about that law or ignored it. Performics launched as an independent network in 1998. In 2004, it was acquired by DoubleClick, which was in turn bought by Google in a $3.1 billion deal that closed in March. In addition to its affiliate-marketing business, Performics also carries a search-marketing division, which Google is in the process of selling. ConnectCommerce.com will continue to host the affiliate network, but it will eventually be converted to a Google.com URL, Google said.
